Standard: Professor Asutay Wins 2024 Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Prize for Impactful Achievement in Islamic Economics

Professor Mehmet Asutay, who serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Islam and Society (AJIS), has been selected as the first-place winner of the 2024 Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Prize for Impactful Achievement in Islamic Economics (www.IsDBInstitute.org) for his significant and influential contributions to the field of Islamic economics and finance.

The prize laureate is a Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Political Economy & Finance at Durham University, United Kingdom. He is an internationally recognized academic who produced pioneering and impactful scholarly works.

Professor Asutay was selected in recognition of his novel work on Islamic moral economy and the articulation of Islamic finance to be supportive of sustainable development and the welfare of human beings.

The Study of Islam and Society in the Modern Academy

The American Journal of Islam and Society, previously the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences, showcases a wide variety of scholarly research on all facets of Islam and the Muslim World (e.g., anthropology, economics, history, philosophy and metaphysics, politics, psychology, law etc.) and publishes scholarship that pertains to the myriad ways in which Islam and human societies interact.

The Journal is delighted to be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of its founding in 1984. In recognition of this milestone, AJIS is pleased to announce a special call for papers critically examining the study of Islam and society in the modern academy.

We invite submissions in a wide range of fields that reflect on the ways that the study of Islam and society has changed over the course of this period, be it within the North American academy, Europe, or the Muslim World writ large. Scholars working on these broad themes are warmly invited to submit abstracts for consideration. For details, please consult our website www.ajis.org.

Standard: AJIS Special Honorarium for Accepted Articles by Early Career Scholars

The American Journal of Islam and Society places a special importance on supporting the work of up-and-coming authors. Early career scholars (i.e., within 3 years of being awarded a Ph.D. or before) working on the journal’s themes are especially encouraged to submit their articles for review. AJIS is pleased to announce that articles by early career scholars accepted by the journal will receive a special honorarium of $500 upon publication, on condition that the recipients clear OFAQ. These articles will be submitted through the usual process, and prospective authors are kindly asked to indicate their status as early career upon submission. We look forward to receiving your work.
